It is common for a business owner to come to us with three quotes for the same 8-page website. Something like ₹15,000, ₹70,000 and ₹2,40,000. They want to know which one is “right.” The honest answer about website development cost in India is that all three could be fair. They are just quoting for three different things.
Here is the short answer. In 2026, the typical website development cost in India is ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000 (about $300 to $1,700) for a business website, ₹60,000 to ₹5,00,000 ($700 to $5,700) for an e-commerce store, and ₹3,00,000 and up ($3,400+) for a custom web application. The rest of this post explains what moves a project from the low end to the high end, so you can read any quote with clear eyes.
All USD figures here use roughly ₹88 to the dollar and are rounded. They are typical ranges we see in the Indian market, not fixed rates.
Website Development Cost in India by Site Type (2026)
Most projects fall into one of these buckets. Find the row closest to what you need, then read the sections below to see where your project sits inside that range.
| Type of website | Typical scope | Cost in INR | Cost in USD (approx.) | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single landing page | 1 page, lead form, basic SEO setup | ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 | $115 to $340 | 3 to 7 days |
| Basic business website | 5 to 10 pages, WordPress, theme-based design | ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 | $300 to $700 | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Custom business website | 10 to 25 pages, custom UI/UX design, blog, CMS | ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 | $700 to $1,700 | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Small e-commerce store | Shopify or WooCommerce, up to ~100 products, payment gateway | ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 | $700 to $1,700 | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Custom or large e-commerce | Custom design, many products, filters, ERP or shipping integrations | ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000 | $1,700 to $5,700 | 2 to 4 months |
| Custom web app (MVP) | Laravel, Next.js or React, user logins, dashboard, core features | ₹3,00,000 to ₹10,00,000 | $3,400 to $11,400 | 2 to 5 months |
| Complex web platform | Marketplace, booking system, SaaS, multiple user roles | ₹10,00,000 and up | $11,400 and up | 4 months and up |
Notice that a custom business website and a small online store can cost about the same. A store with 30 products on Shopify is often less work than a 25-page corporate site with custom design on every page. Page count and design effort matter as much as the type of site.
What Drives the Cost of Website Development in India
When we put a quote together, we are really estimating hours. Everything below adds hours. That is the whole logic behind website pricing.
1. Number of pages and unique templates
Twenty pages that share one layout are cheap. Twenty pages that each need their own layout are not. What we really count is unique templates. A home page, a service page template, an about page, a blog listing, a single post and a contact page is six templates, even if the site ends up with 40 pages. Ask your developer how many templates they are quoting for.
2. Design: ready theme or custom design
A ready-made theme with your logo and colors is the cheapest route. It works for many small businesses. A custom design means a designer plans the layout in Figma first, you review it, and then it is built. This adds one to three weeks and usually 30% to 60% to the budget. It is worth it when your site has to sell hard or look different from competitors. Our UI/UX design service page shows what that design stage includes.
3. Platform and CMS
The platform choice changes both the build cost and the running cost.
- WordPress: the most common choice for business sites. Easy for you to edit, large plugin choice, low build cost.
- Shopify: fast to launch an online store. Lower build cost, but you pay a monthly plan plus app fees.
- WooCommerce: e-commerce on WordPress. No platform fee, more control, slightly more setup and upkeep.
- Laravel or Next.js (custom code): for web apps and sites with logic a CMS cannot handle well. Highest build cost, most flexibility.
4. Features and integrations
This is where budgets grow fast. A contact form takes a few minutes. A booking calendar, a multi-step quote form, member logins, a CRM connection, WhatsApp alerts, a payment gateway like Razorpay or Stripe, or a sync with your ERP each add days. If you already know what tools the site must talk to, list them in your brief.
5. Content: who writes it, who shoots it
Many quotes assume you will send the text and photos. If you do not have them, someone has to write copy, source images or arrange a shoot. Professional copywriting for a 10-page site can add ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 ($115 to $450). Product uploads for a store, with descriptions and image editing, are often charged per product. Missing content is also the most common reason projects run late.
6. Multilingual, SEO and speed work
A second language roughly adds 20% to 40%, depending on how many pages and whether translation is included. Basic on-page SEO (titles, meta tags, sitemap, clean URLs) should be part of any decent build. Ongoing SEO is a separate service. Performance work, like getting good Core Web Vitals scores, costs extra on heavy sites but pays off later in better ad results and rankings.
E-commerce and Web App Development Cost in India
E-commerce websites
For an online store, the main cost drivers are product count, how products vary (sizes, colors, custom options), payment and shipping setup, and GST invoices. A clothing store with 50 products and size variants on Shopify is at the lower end. A B2B store with customer-specific pricing, bulk order forms and a stock sync with Tally or an ERP sits at the upper end. If you are planning a store, our e-commerce website development page covers the platforms we work with.
Custom web applications
A web app is software that runs in the browser: a booking platform, a tutor marketplace, a client portal, an internal tool. Here you are paying for logic, not pages. The cost depends on the number of user roles (customer, vendor, admin), the number of screens, business rules, reports and third-party connections.
We nearly always suggest building a smaller first version (an MVP) and adding features once real users are on it. Read more on our custom software development page.
Freelancer vs Agency vs In-House Team
Who builds the site has a big effect on the price. Each option suits a different kind of project.
| Freelancer | Agency | In-house team | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business website cost | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 ($170 to $570) | ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 ($450 to $1,700) | Salaries of ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000+ per developer per month |
| Best for | Small, clear projects | Business sites, stores, web apps | Products that need daily development |
| Design + dev + SEO | Usually one skill done well | Separate people for each | Depends on who you hire |
| Risk | Single point of failure if they get busy or disappear | Higher cost, check who actually does the work | Hiring time, management, fixed monthly cost |
| Support after launch | Varies a lot | Usually offered as a plan | Always available |
A good freelancer is a great choice for a simple site with a clear brief. An agency makes sense when you need design, development, testing and marketing handled together, or when the site matters too much to depend on one person. In-house is worth it only once you have steady, full-time work for a developer. There is also a middle route: hiring dedicated developers from an agency on a monthly basis, which many foreign businesses and agencies use.
For buyers outside India: rates here are lower than in the US, UK, Europe or Australia mainly because of cost of living, not lower skill. The things to check are the same anywhere: real past work, clear communication, written scope and working hours that overlap with yours.
Hidden Costs Most Quotes Leave Out
The build price is only part of what you spend in year one. These are the items people forget to ask about:
- Domain name: around ₹800 to ₹1,500 a year for a .com or .in.
- Hosting: ₹3,000 to ₹12,000 a year ($35 to $140) for a typical business site on good shared or cloud hosting. Busy stores and web apps need more.
- Premium themes and plugins: page builders, form plugins, backup and security tools often have yearly licenses. Together they can be ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 a year.
- Shopify plan and apps: the monthly plan plus paid apps can add up quickly. Check app costs before you commit.
- Payment gateway fees: a percentage on every transaction.
- Business email: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 is charged per user per month.
- Maintenance: updates, backups, security checks and small edits. Plans usually run ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 a month ($25 to $115) for business sites.
- GST: 18% GST applies to web development services in India. Check whether the quote is inclusive or exclusive. Tax rules change, so confirm the details with your CA. Foreign buyers should check how tax applies to them.
- Marketing after launch: a website without traffic does nothing. SEO, ads or content are separate budgets.
One more thing. Make sure the domain, hosting and admin logins are in your name. It is common to find sites where the old developer holds the domain and the owner cannot get it back easily. That cleanup costs money too.
Why Cheap Quotes Can Cost More
A ₹10,000 website is possible. It usually means a theme demo with your text dropped in, no real testing on mobile, no speed work and no support after handover. That is fine if you only need something online this week.
It becomes expensive when the site breaks after a plugin update, loads slowly on phones, or has to be rebuilt in a year because it cannot grow. Many redesign projects start with a site that was cheap to build and costly to keep.
How to Get an Accurate Website Quote
The more clearly you describe the job, the closer the quote will be to the final bill. Before you contact any developer, prepare this:
- Goal of the site. Leads, online sales, bookings, or just a credible online presence.
- Page list. Even a rough sitemap helps a lot.
- Must-have features. Forms, booking, payments, logins, languages, integrations.
- Two or three reference sites you like, and what you like about them.
- Content status. Do you have text, photos and logo ready, or do you need help?
- Budget range and deadline. Sharing a range is not a weakness. It lets the developer suggest what fits instead of guessing.
Then, when quotes come in, ask each vendor the same questions: How many design revisions are included? Is content upload included? Who owns the code and the logins? What happens after launch, and what does support cost? How are changes outside the scope charged? Vendors who answer these clearly in writing usually deliver clearly too.
