Agency owners often send us a version of this message. They have three new builds signed, one developer already at full load, and no budget to hire a local mid-level dev at London or Sydney rates. They want to know if it makes sense to hire dedicated developers in India, and how to do it without getting burned. The short answer: yes, it works well. But only if you pick the right hiring model, check the team properly and set up communication from day one.

This guide covers what we explain to agencies and businesses in the US, UK, Europe and Australia when they first talk to us. You will find the main hiring models, typical monthly rates in 2026, time zone overlap, how to vet a team, contracts and IP, and the mistakes we see most often.

Why agencies and businesses hire dedicated developers in India

Cost is the first reason, and it is a real one. A good mid-level developer in India costs a fraction of the same person in London, Berlin, Sydney or New York. But cost alone is not why the setup lasts. The ones that last are built on three other things.

    • Depth of talent. There are a lot of developers with real experience in WordPress, Shopify, Laravel, React, Next.js and mobile frameworks.
    • Flexibility. You can add a developer for six months and scale down after, without the cost and paperwork of a local hire.
    • Work while you sleep. With the right handover process, your team in India picks up feedback in their morning and you wake up to progress.

The flip side is that a bad offshore setup costs more than it saves. Most of that comes down to the wrong model or skipped vetting.

Hiring models: dedicated, hourly, fixed price and white-label

Before you talk rates, decide how you want to work. The same developer can cost you very different amounts depending on the model, and each one suits a different kind of work.

    Dedicated developer (monthly)

You get one or more developers working only on your projects, full time, usually around 160 hours a month. They join your Slack, your standups and your task board. This is the best fit when you have steady work for at least three to six months, like an agency with a regular pipeline or a product company with an ongoing roadmap. The vendor handles salary, hardware, leave cover and HR. Our dedicated developer hiring service works this way.

    Hourly (time and material)

You pay for the hours used. Good for maintenance, small fixes, and work where the scope keeps changing. The risk is that hours can creep, so ask for weekly time logs and set a monthly cap.

    Fixed price

One price for a clearly defined project. This works when the scope is locked, for example a five-page brochure site from approved Figma designs, or a Shopify store with a known feature list.

    White-label

The Indian team builds under your agency’s brand. Your client never sees them. You own the client relationship and the sale, they do the build and often the ongoing support after handover. We work this way with agencies in France, Australia and the UAE. We follow their coding standards and processes, and keep supporting those sites after launch. If you run an agency and want to sell more website development without hiring locally, this is usually the model to look at.

    ModelBest forHow you payMain risk
DedicatedSteady work for 3+ months, agency pipelines, product roadmapsFixed monthly fee per developerPaying for idle time if your pipeline dries up
HourlyMaintenance, small fixes, unclear scopePer hour, billed weekly or monthlyHours creeping without clear output
Fixed priceClearly defined, one-off projectsMilestone paymentsChange requests when scope shifts
White-labelAgencies reselling builds under their own brandPer project or monthly retainerQuality reflects on your brand, so vetting matters more

Cost to hire dedicated developers in India in 2026

These are typical ranges we see in the Indian market in 2026 for full-time dedicated developers billed through an agency. They include the vendor’s overheads (office, hardware, software licenses, HR, leave cover). Freelancers will often quote lower, but you take on the risk of no backup if they get sick or leave.

    RoleExperienceMonthly (INR)Monthly (USD)Hourly (USD)
    Junior developer1 to 3 years₹1,10,000 to ₹1,60,000($1,300 to $1,900)$12 to $18
    Mid-level developer3 to 6 years₹1,60,000 to ₹2,60,000($1,900 to $3,000)$18 to $28
    Senior developer / tech lead6+ years₹2,60,000 to ₹3,90,000($3,000 to $4,500)$28 to $45
    UI/UX designer3+ years₹1,30,000 to ₹2,40,000($1,500 to $2,800)$16 to $30
    QA tester2+ years₹90,000 to ₹1,50,000($1,050 to $1,750)$12 to $20

What moves a quote up or down within these ranges:

    • Stack. WordPress and PHP developers sit at the lower end. React Native, Flutter, Next.js and native iOS/Android sit higher, because the pool is smaller.
    • English and client-facing skills. A developer who can join your client calls and write clear updates costs more, and is usually worth it.
    • Shift timing. Asking a team to work US East Coast hours shifts their day into the night in India. Expect a small premium for that.
    • Contract length. A 12-month commitment usually gets a better monthly rate than a month-to-month deal.

If a quote is far below these ranges, ask who is actually doing the work.

    Time zone overlap with India

India runs on IST, which is UTC+5:30 all year with no daylight saving. Here is what that means for working hours in practice.

    • UK and Ireland. India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead. Your morning is our afternoon, so you get 3 to 4 hours of live overlap without anyone changing their schedule.
    • Germany, France and most of Europe. India is 3.5 to 4.5 hours ahead. This gives the best overlap of any region, often 4 to 5 hours.
    • Australia (Sydney, Melbourne). Australia is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of India. Your afternoon lines up with our morning, so you get 3 to 4 hours of overlap. Perth is closer still.
    • US East Coast. India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead. Live overlap is small, usually 1 to 2 hours if the team starts a little later. US clients usually work async with one fixed call slot in their morning.
    • US West Coast. India is 12.5 to 13.5 hours ahead. Plan for async work with a short late-evening or early-morning call a few times a week.

For US clients, the gap can help. Send clear written feedback at the end of your day and the fixes are waiting when you log in.

How to vet a team before you hire dedicated developers in India

Most bad experiences come from skipping this step. A nice website and a good sales call tell you very little.

    1. Look at live work in your stack. Ask for 3 to 5 live sites or apps similar to what you need. If they claim Shopify experience, the examples should be Shopify stores, not WordPress sites.
    2. Talk to the actual developer. Not just the salesperson or the founder. Ask them to walk you through a project they built and explain one hard problem they solved.
    3. Ask for a code sample or a GitHub link.
    4. Run a paid trial. One or two weeks on a real but small task. This tells you more than any interview. A good team will be happy to do it.
    5. Check reviews you can verify. Upwork, Clutch or Google reviews where you can see the client name and project are more useful than testimonials on the vendor’s own site.
    6. Ask about backup. What happens when your developer is on leave or quits?
    7. Check they are a real company. A registered company address, GST registration and a proper invoice are basic signs that you are not dealing with a one-person setup pretending to be a team.

    Contracts, IP and NDA

This is the part people rush, and then regret. Get these in writing before any work starts, and have a lawyer check the contract.

    What the contract should cover

    • IP ownership. All code, designs and content created for you belong to you once paid for. This should be stated clearly, not implied.
    • NDA. Signed before you share client details, credentials or business plans. For white-label work, the NDA should also cover the fact that the vendor will not contact your clients directly.
    • Non-solicitation. Neither side poaches the other’s staff or clients for a set period.
    • Notice period. 15 to 30 days is normal for dedicated hiring.
    • Payment terms. Monthly in advance is common for dedicated developers. Milestones for fixed price.
    • Code handover. You get repository access from day one, not just at the end.

One practical tip: keep the code in your own GitHub or Bitbucket account and add the developers as collaborators. Same for hosting, domains and third-party accounts. If anything goes wrong, you still own everything.

Setting up communication that actually works

The tools matter less than the habits. Here is the setup we use on most dedicated and white-label engagements.

    • One shared chat channel on Slack, Teams or Google Chat. Avoid WhatsApp for project work, because things get lost.
    • One task board in Jira, ClickUp, Trello or Asana. Every task has a clear description, a screenshot or Figma link, and an owner.
    • A daily written update at the end of the developer’s day: what was done, what is next, what is blocked.
    • A fixed weekly call in the overlap window to review progress and plan the next week.
    • A staging site where you can see work in progress at any time, not just at demo day.

Give the team one point of contact on your side. Feedback from three people with three opinions slows everything down.

    Mistakes to avoid

The same problems show up again and again when offshore projects go wrong.

    • Picking the cheapest quote. The lowest rate usually means the least experienced developer, or the one with the most clients at once.
    • No written scope. “Make it like this other site” is not a brief. Write down the pages, features and integrations, even as a simple list.
    • Fixed price for a moving target. If your scope is still changing, go dedicated or hourly. Otherwise you will spend more time arguing about change requests than building.
    • Giving away account ownership. Hosting, domain and repository should sit in your name.
    • Skipping QA. A developer testing their own work will miss things. Budget for some testing time, even a few hours a week.
    • Hiring one generalist for everything. A WordPress developer is not automatically a good app developer. For a mobile build, look for people who do mobile app development day in, day out. For custom platforms and internal tools, look for proper custom software development experience.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a dedicated developer in India?

In 2026, a full-time dedicated developer through an agency typically costs ₹1,10,000 to ₹3,90,000 a month ($1,300 to $4,500), depending on experience, stack and shift timing. Mid-level developers usually fall around $1,900 to $3,000 a month.

Is it safe to outsource development to India?

Yes, if you work with a registered company, sign an NDA and IP agreement, keep code and accounts in your own name, and start with a paid trial. Most problems come from skipping those steps, not from location.

Can Indian developers work in my time zone?

For the UK, Europe and Australia, you get 3 to 5 hours of natural overlap. For the US, most teams agree on a 1- to 2-hour overlap window and work async the rest of the day. Full US-hours shifts are possible at a small premium.

Who owns the code when I hire an offshore developer?

You should. Your contract must state that all IP created for you transfers to you on payment. Keep the repository in your own account from the start so ownership is never in question.

    What is white-label development?

It is when an outside team builds websites or apps that your agency delivers under its own brand. Your client deals only with you. The development partner stays in the background and often handles support after launch too.

    Ready to build your team?

If you want to hire dedicated developers in India, start small. Pick the right model, run a short paid trial, and keep ownership of your code and accounts. Once that works, scaling up is easy.
