A good ecommerce website development company in Kolkata will run your store build in clear stages: discovery, platform choice, design, catalog setup, payments, shipping, GST invoicing, testing, launch and SEO. A small Shopify or WooCommerce store usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. A larger custom or multi-vendor store can take 3 to 6 months.

Below is how each stage works in practice, what you need to provide, and the questions to ask before you sign with any developer.

The stages of an e-commerce build at a glance

Whichever ecommerce website development company in Kolkata you hire, most of the delay will not come from coding. It comes from waiting for product photos, prices, GST details and gateway approvals. Knowing the stages early helps you prepare.

    StageWhat happensWhat you provideTypical time
DiscoveryGoals, products, customers, delivery areas, budgetProduct list, competitor sites you like1 week
Platform and designChoose platform, wireframes, page designsLogo, brand colors, feedback1 to 3 weeks
CatalogProducts, variants, categories, filtersPhotos, descriptions, prices, stock1 to 4 weeks
Payments and shippingGateway, COD rules, courier integrationKYC documents, pickup address1 to 2 weeks
GST and legalTax settings, invoices, policy pagesGSTIN, return and refund rulesUnder 1 week
Testing and launchTest orders, speed, mobile checks, go liveApproval and test purchases1 week

Several stages run in parallel. The catalog can fill up while the design is being built, and gateway KYC should start on day one.

Step 1: Discovery, the part most stores skip

Discovery is a few working sessions where the developer learns how your business actually sells. Skipping it is a common reason stores get rebuilt a year later.

    Useful questions at this stage:

    • Who buys from you, and on what device? For most Indian D2C brands, the answer is mobile.
    • Do you sell only in West Bengal, across India, or abroad?
    • How many products and variants do you have now, and in a year?
    • Do you offer cash on delivery?
    • Do you need wholesale prices for some customers?
    • Will you also sell on Amazon or Flipkart, and should stock stay in sync?

Take a saree brand shipping from Howrah. It may have 400 products, each with one size but many colors, mostly prepaid orders from other states, and frequent new arrivals. A sweet shop in North Kolkata selling gift boxes has a short catalog, local delivery only, and big spikes around Durga Puja and Diwali. These two stores need different setups, and discovery is where that becomes clear.

Step 2: Platform choice and design

Platform choice follows from discovery, not from what the developer happens to prefer.

    • Shopify suits brands that want a hosted store with less technical upkeep and a large app ecosystem.
    • WooCommerce suits businesses that want full control, already use WordPress, or need custom features without monthly app fees.
    • Magento (Adobe Commerce) suits large catalogs, multi-store setups and complex B2B pricing.
    • A custom build (for example Laravel or Next.js) suits marketplaces, multi-vendor models or unusual checkout flows.

Either way, ask your developer to explain why a platform fits your business, in your terms.

Design should start with the mobile product page and checkout, because that is where money is made or lost. Ask for wireframes before visual design. Check the cart and checkout flow on a cheap Android phone, not only on the designer’s laptop.

Step 3: Catalog setup, where projects slow down

The catalog is the store. A beautiful theme with poor product data will not sell.

    For each product you need:

    • At least 3 to 5 clear photos on a plain background, plus lifestyle shots where possible.
    • A title customers would actually search for, such as “Handwoven cotton tant saree, red border” rather than an internal code.
    • A description that answers the questions people ask on WhatsApp: fabric, size, care, delivery time.
    • Price, compare-at price, weight and dimensions (needed for shipping rates).
    • HSN code and GST rate.
    • Variants such as size and color, with stock for each.

For stores with more than about 100 products, ask your ecommerce website developer in Kolkata to set up a spreadsheet import rather than entering products by hand. It saves weeks and makes later updates easier.

Good filters matter more as the catalog grows. Think about how customers shop: by price, by occasion, by fabric, by size. Build filters around those, not around your internal categories.

Step 4: Payments, shipping and GST

    Payment gateways

The common choices in India are Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree. All support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, and all have plugins for Shopify and WooCommerce. Gateways do a KYC check on your business and your website before activating live payments, so start this early and make sure your policy pages are live on the site.

On costs, standard plans usually charge a percentage per successful transaction. For example, Razorpay’s standard rate is 2% plus GST with no setup fee, as explained on its own pricing breakdown. Rates differ by gateway and plan and can be negotiated at higher volumes.

    Cash on delivery

COD still matters for many Indian shoppers, especially outside metros, but it brings returns (RTO) and cash flow delays. Common controls include:

    • A COD limit on order value.
    • A small COD fee or a prepaid discount.
    • OTP or WhatsApp confirmation before COD orders are shipped.
    • Blocking COD for pin codes with high return rates.

    Shipping

Most small and mid-sized stores use a shipping aggregator such as Shiprocket, which connects to several couriers through one account. The store sends order details automatically, prints labels, and pulls tracking updates back to the customer. For local delivery within Kolkata, some stores use their own riders or on-demand services and only use couriers for other cities.

Your developer should set up shipping rates by weight and zone, serviceable pin code checks on the product page, and automatic order status emails or WhatsApp messages.

    GST invoices and legal pages

First-time store owners often forget this until a customer or accountant asks. If you are GST-registered, every order needs a proper tax invoice with your GSTIN, invoice number, HSN codes, tax rate and place of supply. The store must apply CGST and SGST for buyers in West Bengal and IGST for buyers in other states. Shopify and WooCommerce can both do this with the right settings or apps, but it needs testing with real addresses, and your CA should confirm the tax settings.

If you sell to businesses and your turnover crosses ₹5 crore, B2B invoices fall under GST e-invoicing, which needs an integration with the invoice registration portal. Most small D2C stores selling to consumers do not need this, but check with your CA.

Policy pages you need before launch:

    • Shipping policy, with delivery timelines.
    • Return, refund and cancellation policy.
    • Privacy policy and terms of use.
    • Contact details, including a grievance contact, as required under India’s consumer protection rules for e-commerce.

Step 5: Testing, launch and SEO

Before launch, a proper test round covers:

    1. Test orders with each payment method, including a failed payment and a refund.
    2. COD orders, cancellations and returns.
    3. Invoice output for both in-state and out-of-state addresses.
    4. Order emails and WhatsApp messages.
    5. Mobile speed on a slow connection.
    6. Checkout on Android and iPhone, in Chrome and Safari.

For SEO, the work starts during the build, not after. Category pages should have unique text, product pages need unique descriptions (not copied from the supplier), and URLs should be clean. Product structured data helps Google show price, stock and ratings in search results; Google’s product structured data guide explains what to include.

After launch, connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics, submit the sitemap, and watch the first few weeks of orders closely. Small fixes in the first month make a big difference.

Questions to ask an ecommerce website development company in Kolkata

Before you hire, ask these questions. The answers tell you more than a portfolio does.

    • Why do you recommend this platform for my store specifically?
    • Who will own the store, domain, hosting and code after launch?
    • How will you handle GST invoices for in-state and out-of-state orders?
    • Which payment gateway and shipping integrations have you set up before?
    • Can my team add products, change prices and run offers without your help?
    • What does post-launch support cost, and what does it include?
    • How fast does the store load on mobile, and how will you measure it?

For a sense of budget, most small Shopify or WooCommerce stores fall somewhere between ₹60,000 and ₹2 lakh. Mid-sized stores with custom features usually cost ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh, and custom or multi-vendor builds can go well beyond that. These are typical market ranges and depend on scope. Our guide on website development cost in India explains what drives those numbers.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build an e-commerce website in Kolkata?

A small store with up to a few hundred products usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. A mid-sized store with custom features takes 2 to 3 months. Multi-vendor marketplaces and fully custom builds often take 3 to 6 months, depending mostly on how fast content and approvals come in.

Do I need GST registration to sell online?

In most cases, yes. There are limited exemptions for small sellers, and the rules differ between selling on your own website and selling through marketplaces. Speak to your CA before launch, because your invoice setup depends on it.

Which payment gateway is best for a small online store in India?

Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree all work well for small stores and support UPI, cards and net banking. Compare their current rates, settlement times and how easily they integrate with your platform. Many stores pick the one that approves their KYC fastest.

Should I offer cash on delivery?

For many Indian customers, COD builds trust, so removing it can cut orders. But it raises returns and delays cash. A middle path is to keep COD with an order limit and confirmation step, and give a small discount for prepaid orders.

Can I manage the store myself after launch?

Yes, if the developer sets it up that way. Ask for a training session and a short written guide on adding products, processing orders and running discounts. You should not need a developer for daily work.
