Search “dentist near me” from a flat in Salt Lake and Google shows a map with three businesses under it before any normal website. That box is the map pack, and for a local shop, clinic or restaurant it brings in more calls than the rest of the page put together. Local SEO in Kolkata is mostly about getting into that box for the searches that matter to you. The short answer: a complete and verified Google Business Profile and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Add the same name, address and phone number everywhere, and a website with proper pages for your services and the areas you serve.
How Google picks the three businesses in the map pack
Google says local results depend on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
- Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Your category, services, description and website content decide this.
- Distance is how far you are from the person searching, or from the area they typed. You can’t move your shop, but you can make it clear which areas you serve.
- Prominence is how well known you are. Reviews, ratings, mentions on other sites, and the strength of your website all count here.
Distance is why a cafe on Park Street will rarely show for someone searching in Behala. You are not competing with every business in the city, only the ones near your customers. That makes it more winnable than most owners think.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile properly
Your Google Business Profile (it used to be called Google My Business) is the listing that shows in Maps and the map pack. First search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it. If there are two listings for the same place, ask Google to merge or remove the duplicate, because duplicates split your reviews and confuse ranking.
Verification
Google now asks most businesses to verify with a short video showing your signboard, the inside of the premises, and proof you run it, like equipment or a trade license. Record in one continuous take. Listings without a visible signboard get rejected more often.
Business name and category
Use your real name as it appears on your signboard. Do not add “Best Dentist Salt Lake” to it. That breaks Google’s rules and profiles get suspended for it.
The primary category is one of the biggest ranking factors you control. Pick the most specific one that fits. “Dental clinic” beats “Doctor”. “Bengali restaurant” beats “Restaurant” if that is what you are. Then add a few secondary categories for other things you genuinely do.
Address, service area and hours
If customers come to you, show your full address with a landmark people in Kolkata actually use, like “opposite City Centre 1” or “near Karunamoyee bus stand”. If you go to customers, like an AC repair service, pest control or home tutor, hide your address and set a service area instead (for example Salt Lake, New Town, Rajarhat, Lake Town). Keep hours correct, and add special hours for Durga Puja and other holidays.
Step 2: Fill every section of your profile
Many profiles are only half-filled. Google prefers complete listings, and so do customers.
| Profile section | What to add | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Description | What you do, who you serve, which areas, in plain words (750 characters max) | Pasting a keyword list or copying the website “About us” |
| Services / menu | Each service or dish with a short line and price where you can | Leaving it empty, so Google guesses from reviews |
| Photos | Shopfront, signboard, inside, team, products, real work; add new ones every month | Only stock photos or a single logo |
| Attributes | Wheelchair access, UPI accepted, women-led, outdoor seating, appointment needed | Never opening this section |
| Phone and website | A number that is answered, and a link to the right page (not always the homepage) | A personal mobile that is switched off half the day |
| Posts | Offers, new services, Puja timings, events; one or two a month is enough | Posting daily for a week, then nothing for a year |
| Q&A | Add common questions yourself and answer them (parking, home visit, Sunday timings) | Letting strangers answer questions about your business |
Step 3: Reviews, the part most Kolkata businesses ignore
Reviews affect ranking, and they decide who gets the click once you are in the pack. A clinic with 18 reviews usually loses the call to one with 300 nearby. The fix is boring but it works: ask every happy customer, every time.
- Get your short review link from the profile dashboard and turn it into a QR code. Keep it at the billing counter, reception desk or on the table tent.
- Send the link on WhatsApp after the visit or delivery, with one friendly line. Same day works best.
- Tell people they can write in Bengali or English. Many older customers feel more comfortable in Bengali, and natural reviews that mention the area and service help you.
- Reply to every review within a couple of days. For a bad one, stay calm and ask them to call you. Other customers read your reply more than the complaint.
- Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them. Google removes them in batches.
Doctors should never confirm in a reply that the reviewer was a patient or mention treatment. We cover this in more detail on our healthcare website and marketing page.
Step 4: Keep your NAP the same everywhere
NAP means name, address, phone. Google cross-checks these across your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo, Zomato, Facebook and other directories. When they don’t match, Google trusts the details less.
Kolkata addresses make this hard. The same place gets written as “Sector V”, “Sector 5” and “Saltlake Sec-V”, and old listings still carry a number from before you moved. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere:
- Write down your official name, full address with pin code, and main phone number exactly as they appear on Google.
- Search your business name and old phone numbers on Google to find every listing that exists.
- Update or claim each one, starting with the biggest directories and the ones specific to your trade.
- Put the same NAP in your website footer and on the contact page as real text, not inside an image.
Step 5: Build local pages on your website
Google reads the page your profile links to, and a strong site lifts the profile. A one-page site with a phone number and a slider won’t rank for much beyond your own name.
One page per service
If you are a dental clinic, “root canal treatment”, “braces” and “teeth cleaning” each need their own page with what it is, how long it takes, a price range and FAQs.
Area-level pages, done honestly
If you serve several parts of the city, area pages help you show up for searches like “interior designer New Town” or “physiotherapy at home Salt Lake”.
The rule is simple: each page must be genuinely about that area. Mention the localities you cover (for New Town: Action Area I, II and III, Chinar Park), visit charges, jobs done there, and photos from that area. Copying one page and swapping “Salt Lake” for “Park Street” gives thin duplicate pages that Google ignores.
Only build area pages for places you really serve. A Ballygunge restaurant needs no Dum Dum page.
Technical basics
- Fast loading on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data.
- A click-to-call button and a WhatsApp button that stay visible on mobile.
- LocalBusiness schema markup with your NAP, hours and geo-coordinates, so Google reads your details without guessing.
Our web design team in Kolkata builds sites for local businesses with these basics set up from day one.
Bengali and English keywords for local SEO in Kolkata
People in Kolkata search in a mix: mostly English, some Bengali script, and a lot of Bengali typed in English letters, like “bhalo biryani near me” or “dhakai saree shop Gariahat”.
You don’t need a full Bengali website. What usually works:
- Keep main pages in English, and add common Bengali names of your products or services in the text where they fit naturally (for example “mishti doi”, “tant saree”, “dant er daktar” in an FAQ).
- Use local area names the way people say them: “Gariahat”, “Hatibagan”, “Shyambazar five-point crossing”, “Salt Lake City Centre”.
- Look at the “People also ask” box and Google autocomplete for your service plus an area name. Those are the exact phrases to answer on your pages.
- If a large share of your customers prefer Bengali, a few Bengali landing pages for your main services can work well, but keep them properly written, not machine-translated.
This matters most for restaurants and sweet shops. More on our restaurant and food business page.
Step 6: Track calls and know what is working
Rankings alone don’t pay rent. Set up tracking before you start so you can compare month to month.
- Profile performance: the Business Profile dashboard shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and the search terms people used to find you. Check it monthly.
- UTM tag on your website link: add a tag like ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp to the website URL in your profile. Then Google Analytics shows visits that came from the profile separately.
- Click tracking on the site: track taps on the call button, WhatsApp button and form submits as conversions in Google Analytics.
- Call tracking numbers: if you want exact numbers, a tracking number can go on the profile as the primary phone, with your real number added as the additional phone. This keeps NAP consistent while still counting calls.
How long it takes and what it typically costs
For a business with a decent existing listing in a less crowded category, you can see movement in the map pack within 6 to 10 weeks. In competitive categories like dentists, skin clinics, restaurants or interior designers around Salt Lake, New Town and Park Street, 4 to 6 months of steady work is more realistic.
In 2026, typical ranges in the Indian market look like this. A one-time profile setup and cleanup (claiming, verification, categories, photos, NAP fixes on major directories) usually costs between ₹8,000 and ₹25,000. Ongoing monthly local SEO, with posts, review handling, citations, local page content and reporting, usually sits between ₹12,000 and ₹40,000 a month. The price depends on the number of locations, how many service and area pages are needed, and how competitive your category is.
Be wary of anyone promising “guaranteed number one on Google Maps in 15 days”. Nobody controls Google’s ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a profile costs nothing. You only pay if you hire someone to manage it or run Google Ads that show your listing as a sponsored result.
Can I rank in the map pack without a website?
You can show up for searches very close to your shop, but busy categories are hard to win without a website with proper service and area pages.
Can I rank in areas where I don’t have an office?
For the map pack, it is difficult, since distance from your address matters. A service-area business can set nearby areas, and your website area pages can still rank in normal results for “service + area” searches.
Why did my Google Business Profile get suspended?
Common reasons are keywords added to the business name, a virtual or shared address, a home address shown for a service business, or sudden big edits. Fix the issue, then file a reinstatement request with photos and documents that prove the business is real.
How many reviews do I need to rank?
There is no fixed number. Look at the three businesses currently in the pack for your main search and aim to match them, then keep getting new reviews every month. A steady flow matters more than a one-time burst.
